I recently went for a check-up at my family doctor and found out my body is virtually depleted of Vitamin D. That's a scary thought since Vitamin D is a vital substance our bodies need. Our lack of getting out in the sun (especially during the winter months) has a negative effect on us-our bodies need that sunshine, even if it's only for a few minutes a day. Vitamin D is known to reduce your risk for high blood pressure, diabetes and depression. (Especially depression for me-which I refer to as cabin fever during the long winter months when I hesitate to leave the house when it's so bitter cold!)
Lack of Vitamin D "MAY" also, double your risk of stroke death. That's an even scarier thought, but there is help for those of us who lack this essential vitamin...supplements can be taken on a weekly basis now, eating foods like tuna and egg yolks can supply some of the 1,000 IU's we need per day. (For Women-not sure how much is required for a man.) If you haven't had a yearly physical yet this year-it might be to your advantage to get checked for vitamin deficiencies too! A simple blood test will let you know!
Update: I had to find a reference to just how much time we should spend in the sun to benefit from it.
This is what I found:
Good News-Just 15 minutes of exercise can produce sufficient Vitamin D.
Bad News-It didn't say if this was daily or weekly?? I would have to venture a guess and say daily-I've always been a sun worshipper and walking around the block every day is doable!

My internist has me and DH on 2000 units a day. Prevents cancer? So he says and I'm believing him! I don't like the sun (except to be inside and look out!). : )
Vit. D3 is cheap, fortunately.
