Skinny Cows!

That's right-a new, wonderfully delicious ice cream sandwich!  Oh yummy!  I found these in the freezer section at my new A Fresh Market the other day...140 calories, 1.5 grams of fat..unbelievably delicious!  A little pricey-but well worth the indulgence! :-D  Put a smile on your face!  These Skinny Cows come in both-vanilla and chocolate!

Tidbits

Tidbit #1-Nuts are full of magnesium-a mineral linked to short & long term memory.  When deciding what nuts to eat-they all are good but Almonds and Pistachios seem to get more reviews in the eating heathy magazines.
Tidbit #2-When eating apples, eat the peeling to help reduce the waist line.
Tidbit #3-Besides Fish Oil (Omega 3's) helping to reduce cholesterol levels-Walnuts can be beneficial too.  We already knew Oatmeal can help with lowering these levels as well.  I found a new (new to me) favorite-Banana Bread flavored Oatmeal-yummy!  (Made by Quaker-Weight Contol)
Tidbit #4-Plain popcorn is a great whole grain that can help you to keep your insulin levels even and cause less fat to be stored by your body.  Whole grains in general are rich in fiber-which keeps you feeling full and they can delay the absorption of sugars into the body.  Of ocurse it's best to eliminate as much refined sugars in your diet as possible.
Tidbit #5-Vinegar promotes fat burning because it contains acetic acid.  Some of the new vigarette salad dressings are way tasty and instead of pouring the dressing directly on the salad (because I always manage to pour way too much-love that dressing!) I put the dressing in a glass side dish, so I can dip my salad into the dressing.  A little goes a long ways when you eat salad like this-less calories!  Did you know that some Caesar dressings are 100% fat calories!!  Oh my gosh!  Make sure to read the labels!!
Tidbit #6-What's up with the new Buzz word...CORE?  You hear it everywhere-see it in print in every fitness magazine-but it just means your Abs!  Somebody wanted to see if they could stir up the masses by creating a new word for the millions of body fitness aficianitos.
Tidbit #7-In the winter months, you should use a face and/or body cleasnsers that don't get too sudsy.  This is new to me!  The reason stated is: "The less foam there is, the less likely it is that the product will dry out your skin."  Well, I for one get such horribly dry skin during the winter, that the skin on my knuckles crack and bleed.  I've had to use chapstick/bee balm on them, nothing else seems to help heal them.

Did you Know? I'm A Concerned Mom

In the new May*June 2010 Weight Watchers Magazine, they published a true or false quiz about bone knowledge and one thing I read made me wonder about my daughters health and whether they were aware of this vital fact.
Researchers from the University of Texas recently reported that nearly half of the women receiving a birth control shot called Depo-Provera, lost about 5 percent of their bone density in both their hip and lower spine, within 2 years.   To me that would be taking huge risks-by telling us about this side effect, does it let the drug company off the hook for causing skeletal bone-mass damages or injuries as a result of women getting this shot?
Honestly, I don't always give credence to research-the results from some research testing do tend to come unglued after awhile-in other words, the findings are usually in doubt after a little time has passed, or the findings have been ruled out all together-but the potential risks here are what set the red flag waving to me-whether the facts get proven or not, in the long run, my daughters risk of a hip injury or chronic lower back strain due to a birth control shot is not within what I consider a safe alternative.  Thank goodness I do happen to know neither of my DD's use this product, but I will be shooting off an e-mail to my DIL in a minute!  This is something every women using birth control, should know!

Slow the Aging?

It's a given that exercise helps us look younger and stronger on the outside,  (I noticed myself in the mirror at the gym yesterday and made the comment to my DD:  "WOW-Your Mom sure has some guns!" LOL!  In just a month's time-I am seeing a lot of improvement!) but what does exercise do for our insides?  Research has proven that exercise can help prevent aging at a cellular level and over a period of time, exercise helps us to maintain good cellular health, helps with arthritis in the joints by improving movement, promotes good bone health and of course keeps our heart healthy and lungs functioning properly-(you gotta remember to keep breathing.)
It is still a good idea to work out safely-I, for one have osteo-arthritis in my knees, ankles and elbows-while the ankles and elbows have improved now (without meds)-I still have to be careful with my right knee and right elbow.  I upped my workout weights the other day and immediately decided that wasn't such a good idea and dropped back to a safer weight.  I would much rather do more reps than take a chance of getting hurt in a joint by pulling or damaging a tendon.  (I started with 2 lbs and moved up to 3 lbs and moved up to 5 lbs-but can't go to the 10's-it's just too much stress on the elbow joint.  This is hand-weights-on the machines, weight varies depending on the machine, but I'm still below 50 lbs.-but doing 4 reps instead of 2 now.  I've built up to this very slowly over a month's time-don't rush it!)
Another thing-doing lunges with a knee that doesn't want to work is no fun-what I do for added support and safety is-I take apart my broom and use the handle for added stability.  This helps me to bend the knee and get back up without adding undo pressure to a weak knee-yet it allows me to do the full workout.  Eventually, I may not need that broom handle-but it gives me a sense of security-knowing I'm not going to hurt my knee and be off my feet for months!  (This is when I'm working out at home-in the gym I will skip this part of the class and do stretches or work my abs instead.  Don't be afraid to do your own thing-you don't have to follow the class!)
The moral of the story is-get to work but work safely and check out that mirror once in awhile!  :-D

Recipe 2

As promised-here is my recipe for quick and easy Caesar Chicken Wraps.  DH loved them and two was very filling!  There was enough leftover salad that I made a small dinner size salad for DH too!

Did you know?

Recently it has been observed that if while you are working out-if you do short, quick, controlled bursts of intense cardio, it can boost your fat burning by up to 36% in just 2 weeks.  Well, that's what the latest studies show and everybody is tooting the horn!  But, what does this mean exactly?
If you were out jogging and you were going about your business in a normal pace for 2-3 minutes, but all of a sudden a dog started chasing you....you would boost that cardio workout very quickly-but only let that dog chase you for 1-2 minutes, then you can resume your lesiurely normal strut for 2-3 minutes before that dog is chasing you again.  You need to play the dog chase game for about 15-20 minutes to really get that metabolism working on burning off that fat and if you have a tread mill or a bike-the same game can be played on them too.  This  kind of workout really works up a quick sweat and makes those legs burn!

Healthy Eats » Archive » 5 Ingredients: Tuna Pasta Salad

I grew up eating this delicious summer tuna pasta salad but cubed cheddar cheese was a main ingredient then-it can be again.  A great mid-day lunch-gotta love the Omega 3's!
