Magazines are great sources for little tips and tidbits and these are brought to you by Shape magazine, from my local library:
1. Woman who regularly eat frozen entrees, lose an average of 30-35% more weight. Why? The portions or calories are controlled. I can believe this statement, but I can't stomach frozen foods. No matter how easy they are and convenient they might be, if they don't taste good-I don't want to waste my money buying them. I've tried a few, frozen pizza is good-I don't think you can go wrong with a frozen pizza!
2. If you start your meal with a bowl of soup, you will eat 20% fewer calories. Why? Your tummy is already full, so you will eat less. Why not start your one major meal of the day with either a salad or bowl of soup! I think it's a great plan of attack.
3. Don't eat in front of the TV. I may have shared this one already, but it's worth repeating.
4. Substitute mushrooms for meat and you will eliminate hundreds of calories. I love mushrooms, never used to, but I do now. I add them in my salads, with my stir fries and I'll eat them cold out of the frig, as a snack. No dressing, just plain white mushrooms. Portabella's are a different story and I'm still trying to find that perfect recipe for cooking that perfect portabella.
5. Eat nuts-a handful a day and you will likely eat 200 calories less because nuts fill you up with fiber and the protein keeps you satisfied. Eating 50 pistaschios is a great mid-day snack.
6. Start your day, everyday, with whole grains to help you burn more fat throughout the day. (Oatmeal is a good source for whole grains.)
7. Just 40 minutes of vigorous aerobics can make your body burn a higher rate of calories, while it's not working out. Your body continues to burn calories throughout the day, but eventually it will slow down and not burn as many. I don't know about you, but I refuse to count calories burned by doing X exercise for X length of time. Why bother-just do the exercise-unless you are banking calories for a binge later, why frustrate yourself!
8. Drink green tea to boost your metabolism by about 4% compared to caffeine drinks. I'm not a tea drinker, never have been, never will be, but thought I would include this tidbit for those of you who are.
9. Yogurt will help you lose 22% more weight and 61% more body fat. OK-with statistics like that, I better get use to eating these. I'm so glad they have improved the variety of choices because this is one food product I really do not like! I think I'd be willing to try that new Greek Yogurt that everybody is talking about, it's suppose to have honey in it! I like honey!
10. Olive Oil helps burn more fat. Probably why the Mediterranean Diet was so popular.
Here's a little math for you: You can burn 25-30 calories just by digesting 100 calories of protein, versus only burning 7 calories while digesting 100 calories of simple carbs. Who thinks of these things and why do we want to know this? So, OK, I'm eating more protein!
This is a place where you can share your dieting tips, tidbits, recipes, links to various diet related websites, your successes and general diet info on exercise, weight loss, etc.

Tidbits
Tidbit #1-Nuts are full of magnesium-a mineral linked to short & long term memory. When deciding what nuts to eat-they all are good but Almonds and Pistachios seem to get more reviews in the eating heathy magazines.
Tidbit #2-When eating apples, eat the peeling to help reduce the waist line.
Tidbit #3-Besides Fish Oil (Omega 3's) helping to reduce cholesterol levels-Walnuts can be beneficial too. We already knew Oatmeal can help with lowering these levels as well. I found a new (new to me) favorite-Banana Bread flavored Oatmeal-yummy! (Made by Quaker-Weight Contol)
Tidbit #4-Plain popcorn is a great whole grain that can help you to keep your insulin levels even and cause less fat to be stored by your body. Whole grains in general are rich in fiber-which keeps you feeling full and they can delay the absorption of sugars into the body. Of ocurse it's best to eliminate as much refined sugars in your diet as possible.
Tidbit #5-Vinegar promotes fat burning because it contains acetic acid. Some of the new vigarette salad dressings are way tasty and instead of pouring the dressing directly on the salad (because I always manage to pour way too much-love that dressing!) I put the dressing in a glass side dish, so I can dip my salad into the dressing. A little goes a long ways when you eat salad like this-less calories! Did you know that some Caesar dressings are 100% fat calories!! Oh my gosh! Make sure to read the labels!!
Tidbit #6-What's up with the new Buzz word...CORE? You hear it everywhere-see it in print in every fitness magazine-but it just means your Abs! Somebody wanted to see if they could stir up the masses by creating a new word for the millions of body fitness aficianitos.
Tidbit #7-In the winter months, you should use a face and/or body cleasnsers that don't get too sudsy. This is new to me! The reason stated is: "The less foam there is, the less likely it is that the product will dry out your skin." Well, I for one get such horribly dry skin during the winter, that the skin on my knuckles crack and bleed. I've had to use chapstick/bee balm on them, nothing else seems to help heal them.

Are you ready to get started? General Tidbits
Here are a few tips that will help kick start your diet into gear:
1. Moderately intense cardio 5 times per week, will help you burn off the fat and boost your metabolism-so jump on the treadmill today! Walk around the block a few times if you don't have a treadmill or go to the mall and walk around that a few times-the idea is to get your body moving-it's heart (Cardio) healthy! (No window browsing-walk at a good pace and increase the pace every few days until you find a good pace for yourself.)
2.Keep your metabolism burning those calories and belly fat by using extra weights. You can use either ankle weights when walking or hand/wrist weights. (I limit my extra weight to no more than 5 lbs. total!)
3. Eating 4-6 little meals throughout your day, keeps your body fueled. Start each day off eating lean protein, healthy fats and complex carbs-Never skip breakfast-eat something within the first 90 minutes of waking and do a quick 10 minute workout first thing-while you're still in your jammies! (more on this later.)
4. Your body needs IRON to be properly energized. Great sources are: beans, whole grain cereals and prune juice.-Read the labels!
5. Drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated, your skin elastic. Water converts food into energy which keeps your metabolism at it's peak performance during the day. Sip water: before, during and after your workouts and eat a snack immediately after your workout. (I recently found the Kellogg's Special K bars-only 90 calories, 2 grams of fat, 1 gram of protein. A great snack after a workout that stays with you for a few hours.-I am not affiliated with Kellogg's just like this product and a few of their other products-have you tried out the multi-grain crackers! Only 90 calories per 17 crackers and they are fabulous with The Laughing Cow, light flavored cheese wedges! Only 35 calories, 2 grams of fat per wedge-lots of flavor!)
6. Strength and resistance training. There are some wonderful videos that incorporate hand weights into the workout exercise routines. These are my favorite types of videos to workout with-but a word of caution-DO NOT use heavy weights when you first begin. Start with small weights (2-3 lbs) and build up to the higher weights. I will not use anything over a 5 lb hand weight for these workouts, as it is too easy to injure an elbow or shoulder. It's better to stay at the lighter weight and do more reps than to move to heavier weights and get hurt. (Use your own judgement when determining what is right for you!) Be aware also that using hand weights is totally different than using weighted machines at the gym. You may be able to lift or pull much more weight when working out with machines, but still be aware of what your body can and cannot do at this stage. Build up to the heavier weights and don't over do it! Injuries can take months to heal and sometimes require surgery! Please be careful when using any weight other than your own body weight for workouts!
7.Pilates and Yoga-are for flexible people! I myself cannot get into some of the positions that are required, but then again there are some I find quite easy. Pilates and Yoga I believe are really the same exercise-slightly different-but regardless of what it is called-it's good exercise to keep your body toned all over.
8. So what's with the new buzz word-"Core"??? That's all it is, a new buzz word-they are referring to your abs-the muscles that make up your middle-waist and abdomen. The muscles I have the most issues with since I tend to pack on the pounds in my "Core".
